Canon History/Backstory
During the Sengoku Era, an evil warlord named Gengetsu Kibaoni believed that the best way to unite the war-torn Japan was through fear. He was killed by the Igasaki clan of the time, and was forcibly sealed away, but vowed to return after 444 years as a horrible demon who would unite the world through terror. At some point in the future, implied to be well before the time he stated, he managed to free himself and his three generals, resurrecting them all as demons - however, the Igasaki clan was there to seal him again. Yoshitaka Igasaki sealed Kibaoni away with the 48 Sealing Shuriken. But the prophecy still turned out to be true - in the year 2015, Izayoi Kyuemon would free Gengetsu once more.
All of this has nothing to do with Kinji just yet. So, moving on.
There is very little of Kinji's childhood and young adulthood in canon, barring two major incidents that get explored later within the series. He was Texas born (presumably) and raised, the second son in his small family. With his father and older brother always away from home hunting monsters, Kinji grew up without them as a major physical presence in his life. Despite this, he loved them very much, and saw them as role models in his life.
At some point during his late teenage years, Kinji encountered Yoshitaka Igasaki, The Last Ninja. Kinji was so taken by the man's ninja techniques that he was on his knees begging to be the Last Ninja's pupil. Yoshitaka refused, initially on the grounds that Kinji had no Nintality - the innate ability required to perform Igasaki clan Shuriken Ninpou. Kinji didn't accept this response, and so Yoshitaka continues to deny him repeatedly, so many, many times, so many times, until eventually Kinji's obstinance wore him down to the point that Yoshitaka relented and gave him an ultimatum - if Kinji could defeat the Last Ninja in battle, he would be accepted as the old man's pupil.
This started the young cowboy on his path to becoming the sole successor to the Last Ninja. For the next few years Kinji learned how to be a ninja: by copying Yoshitaka's techniques and reading his autobiography (an English book titled "I am The LAST NINJA"), as well as learning Japanese by meticulously studying rakugo and period dramas, he increased his Nintality and Japanese language skills. While in America, he also corresponded via email with Tetsunosuke Saika XXI, a renowned clockwork engineer who built the other Ninninger's mechas, to build Rodeomaru and the Bison Buggy. It can be presumed that, given there were blueprints in the Last Ninja's autobiography, Kinji was heavily involved in the design process of his mecha. It can safely be presumed Kinji made his own gear otherwise.
After he became sufficiently proficient in both his Japanese and Ninpou skills(the former far more so than the latter), Kinji packed up everything he owned and hauled ass to Japan to hunt down Yoshitaka - and by extension, the mythically powerful shuriken he possessed, the End Shuriken. Believing he could find the item in his quest to become the Last Ninja, Kinji started in Japan by attacking and defeating Youkai; however, the only Youkai we see him destroy contained only a regular Sealing Shuriken.
After that failed encounter, Kinji stumbles across the Ninninger, who have only just learned about the End Shuriken themselves, and find out through a news report that Aoninger's mother has it, and is using it in a fashion show. Kyuemon also finds out about this, and the two sides fight over the shuriken - only for it to get snapped in the battle, revealing it to be a fake, with Kinji hiding nearby to witness this.
Shortly afterwards, Kinji intervenes in their battle and introduces himself in the most dramatic manner possible, using Shurikenjin Drago as a ramp to run up and deal the finishing blow to the monster of the week, stealing their kill.
Then he just ollies outie. Later nerds.
That same night, he tracked down Yoshitaka Igasaki again, and proceeded to murder the man - or at least attempt to, cutting him down outside the man's oden stand. Yoshitaka manages to escape and return to the Ninninger before he collapses, and the next day the Ninninger attempt to set up a trap to lure Kinji in. They pretend to be their grandpa running the stand, and Kinji falls hook line and sinker. Akaninger, Aoninger and Shironinger try to take him down, but even outnumbered he easily overpowers them, and announces who he is to them - the world's greatest Youkai Hunter!
Akaninger is very quick to shoot him down. However, the monster of the week is quick to distract them from their chat, and Kinji disappears to take it on.
The three Ninninger then learn from Momoninger and Kininger that Kinji isn't evil, technically; just a huge fucking Yoshitaka fan boy, same as Akaninger. After defeating the monster, Yoshitaka sends the six young adults a message; an ultimatum to the at-odds group. If Kinji wanted to be the Last Ninja's student, he would have to defeat all five of the Ninninger before one month was up. The Ninninger's task, in turn, was simply to defeat Kinji.
Later that week Kinji tried to kill Akaninger in his bed. When caught out by the rest of the Ninninger, he revealed that as the newest student, he would take it upon himself to be an outstanding kohai for them. This included making everyone breakfast and doing other such menial chores, in-between attempts at murder. This ends up meaning that he starts to join them in battle and fights alongside them against Youkai, something he is initially reluctant to do. However, watching the other Ninninger training hard after Akaninger gets put out of commission makes him attempt to stop Akaninger from joining the fray, since Kinji is convinced that this show means that they don't require Aka's help. However, this is a sentai and teamwork is everything, and Kinji gets convinced to join in the fray instead, and battles Kyuemon for the first time while Akaninger defeats one of Gengetsu's generals. When the general gets raised as a giant monster, Kinji even joins in on their mecha transformation, and is made to promise not to kill the Ninninger while they're combined.
After the successful fight, Kinji is approached by Yoshitaka again, and while he does learn that Yoshitaka's reluctance to take him as a pupil stems directly from Kyuemon Izayoi being his last pupil and betraying him completely, Yoshitaka harshly criticises Kinji for being weak-willed and easily swayed. This causes Kinji to approach the Ninninger and firmly tell them he is refusing to help them anymore, in an attempt to make himself of firmer conviction. This lasts all of half the episode, until Kininger learns that Kinji's father and brother are both dead (and that this is the reason for Kinji wanting to be the Last Ninja's apprentice), before forcibly recruiting the American to help him and Akaninger to save the other Ninninger. Kinji learns a valuable lesson about family and Yoshitaka sets them a new task: find and tame the Heavenly OtomiNin.
The constant murder attempts Kinji makes quickly become routine to the Ninninger, and at one point even scold him for doing so while some of them are studying. He tries to murderize Aka and Ao, but as the two are busy searching for the Heavenly OtomiNin, Kinji leaves them be, and abandons his mecha Rodeomaru to go do their own things. Rodeomaru is immediately approached and hypnotised by the most recent Youkai, and does not come when Kinji later calls him. The Youkai approaches Kinji too, and before Aoninger and Momoninger can stop him, he too falls for the Youkai's trick and is put under its spell. Momoninger saves the day, and after all the mechas are done fighting, Kyuemon lures Kinji away to meet with him in private.
Kyuemon has an offer for Kinji - they know Yoshitaka would never give Kinji the End Shuriken he is after, so how about becoming Kyuemon's apprentice instead? Kyuemon takes their leave then, simply telling Kinji to think about it as the other Ninninger find him.
But time continues passing, monsters continue appearing, and Kinji's time to defeat the Ninninger dwindles, until it's one day before his deadline and he's no closer to defeating them than he was when he started; if anything, he's far less so due to befriending them all. Kyuemon approaches him again, asking him if he's reconsidered their offer, but Kinji asks for one more day to consider. The new Youkai that appears, however, is one that creates illusions of great despair, and he gets caught easily under its spell. The Ninninger come to his rescue and find out how he got caught so easily: the illusion shows Kinji's father and brother getting killed in front of him, defending him from a werewolf Youkai. With the Ninninger's help, Kinji breaks free of the spell and escapes, and the lot of them defeat the Youkai, even creating Surfermaru through their newfound bond. After this, all six Ninninger offer letters of challenge to Kinji, and the scene is set for Kinji and Akaninger to fight. But before they can exchange even a single blow, Yoshitaka interrupts, and declares Kinji's challenge failed and over - according to him, Kinji hadn't set his clock back, and had thus overestimated how much time he had left: his challenge was over right then.
Yoshitaka gifted him Surfermaru as a consolation prize, and forced him to leave and find his own path. He was gone for like 80% of the next episode (long enough in-story for him to have written and sent the Ninninger a postcard) before he was accidentally dragged back to Japan by Akaninger using the Surfermaru Shuriken and not realising Kinji was inside the mecha. He gets dragged into the giant mecha, and is able to help defeat the monster through his extensive knowledge of them.
After the fight, Kinji prepares to leave again, but the others convince him to stay, and in his place they ask Yoshitaka to give him another chance. Yoshitaka, of course, refuses, and says that he won't even consider Kinji as a student until the Ninninger can surpass him at something. Meanwhile, Kinji is approached by Kyuemon again, who he attacks in a fit of anger, saying how he should never have even considered accepting Kyuemon's offer. In response, Kyuemon tells him about the Heavenly OtomiNin before simply disappearing.
Kinji informs the others, muddling about the exact way he found this info, and the group set off to recruit the Heavenly OtomiNin. Who turns out to be a drunk asshole called Shishioh who totally roasts them all about their skills and lack thereof, and initially rejects their offer to be part of their crew. However, Akaninger is able to lead the others by using the criticism Shishioh gave them, and wins his friendship. Through this, Kinji is finally allowed to be an student of the Last Ninja albeit an interim one.
More monsters attack and more team bonding happens with Kinji and the others, until some new, stronger monsters appear - the Three Great Western Youkai. Two of these, Frankenstein and Dracula, are defeated without further issue, but the third monster is Wolfman.
The other Ninninger allow Kinji to take the kill, but Wolfman can't be harmed by regular attacks, and Kinji gets wrecked. This is how Yoshitaka learns that Kinji only wants the End Shuriken for personal gain - to bring back his family that the Wolfman killed - and banishes him from the dojo.
The next day, the other Ninninger go back to try and defeat Wolfman once more, but Kinji gets delayed by Kyuuemon blocking his path, and offers to give him the power necessary to defeat the Wolfman: namely, Youkai power. Kinji isn't really given much of a choice; paralysed by indecision between trusting Kyuuemon and helping his friends, Kyuuemon starts the process to fill him with the dark energy. Kinji managed to escape before the process was complete, but the damage was done: he had an indeterminate amount of Youkai energy within him. However, it meant he was able to kill the Wolfman (getting clawed in the shoulder by it in the process) almost singlehandedly. This finally gets him accepted by Yoshitaka, and he becomes a formal student of the Last Ninja.
After this, Kyuuemon starts sending specifically stronger Youkai, powerful guards of Gengetsu that Kyuuemon trained in Izayoi-style Ninpou in order to fight the Ninninger. All four are sent and all four are summarily defeated, but their deaths weren't a waste - Kyuuemon had been using them in order to create shuriken of their own, ultimately revealing that they have created their own giant mecha robot, that absolutely destroys the Ninninger and all of their OtomiNin, including Lion Ha-Oh. The Ninninger manage to escape while Yoshitaka distracts Kyuuemon, but they are left unable to use their OtomiNin. Seeking the help of Tetsunosuke Saika XXII once more, the six Ninninger design their own personal OtomiNin - however, with no soul to power them, the models are useless, and they are still powerless. Akaninger decides to fight regardless, and is unable to be talked out of it, and has the brilliant idea to possess his model; since his OtomiNin now has a soul inside it, his own, Akaninger is able to fight, and the others are quick to follow suit. This act creates a new shuriken for each of them that allows them to soul-meld with their respective OtomiNin more easily in future. And with their newfound mecha and extra Nintality from having created and formed so many mechas on their own, the Ninninger are able to defeat Kyuuemon and destroy the Youkai's mecha for good.
A few weeks after this, more trouble befalls Kinji - between the Youkai power Kyuuemon filled him with, alongside the attack he took from Wolfman, his body is so filled with the evil energy that he is starting to turn into a Youkai himself. Kyuuemon appears yet again, to tell him that they know how to cure it. The bad guys intervene quite fiercely, trying to destroy Kyuuemon for wasting their master's resources, as well as the Ninninger. Kyuuemon and Kinji manage to get ahead, and find a demonic sword titled Urasame, fabled to be able to remove Youkai energy from a being. However, Kyuuemon's entire presence is a set-up: when Kinji regroups with the other Ninninger, defeat the day's monster and go to leave, Kyuuemon casts a spell on the sword. Instead of removing Kinji's Youkai energy, it fills him with it completely, causing him to transform into a Wolfman, and attack his comrades. This shortly wears off, and the others take him to recover.
Yoshitaka takes the sword away from Kinji, warning him and Kininger that Kinji using it more will result in him permanently becoming a Youkai, and so he should stay out of fighting until they can find a cure. Unfortunately, Kyuuemon sets up another, far more powerful Youkai to keep the Ninninger busy while he confronts Yoshitaka, proposing a trade - Kinji's humanity for the End Shuriken. Kinji disobeys Yoshitaka and goes to fight alongside the others, and before Yoshitaka can make a decision the sword flies out of his grip and back to Kinji, triggering amother transformation that is so overwhelming as to cause him to black out.
We see what's happening inside his mind as the other Ninninger are stuck watching him - Kyuuemon is standing there, and removes their mask to reveal Kinji's face beneath it. Other Youkai appear around Kinji, taunting him by wearing his face and telling him how his body has been united with the Youkai power; now he's one of them. Your fears, your doubts, your anxieties... you can forget them all. He looks ready to be swayed, but memories of the other Ninninger stop him from giving in. He knows he can be weak, but his weakness and doubts are just as much a part of him as his strengths. The Youkai power is a part of him now, and he can live with that, because it's him. That acceptance makes him shine like a beacon, and with some guiding words from Yoshitaka, he cuts away the darkness within himself, and evolves into Super Starninger form. The Demon Sword Urasame is turned into a powerful weapon of his own, the Ninja Sword Gekiatsuto.
After this the series focuses on the Ninninger as a group, as opposed to any one character singularly, so from here it's a little tl;dr. The final battle with Kibaoni Gengetsu happens, during which Kyuuemon is offered a chance at redemption by Kinji and Akaninger. Kyuuemon accepts their kindness, but before he can accept their offer he is fatally injured by Gengetsu and dies shortly after. The big bad is finally defeated, and the Ninninger go their separate ways to train for two years, and return to find that Shironinger and Momoninger have taken over protecting Japan from Youkai and are national stars, managed by Akaninger and Shironinger's mother.
The boys are no longer allowed to legally use their ninja style, as it's now technically a copyrighted term, so the four boys team up against the girls, who are also joined by Shironinger's father and a newcomer, Midorininger, to compete in one-on-one battles to determine whether the boys can use their abilities and weapons. However, the bad guys have quietly returned and interfere with the contest so that the girls win, leaving the boys unarmed and unarmoured when the villains stage their comeback, KOing Shiro and Momoninger almost instantly. It's Midorininger that ends up saving the day; Kyuuemon has been possessing her in order to pay back the Ninninger, whose kindness has prevented him from passing on properly. Shironinger's mother relents and lets the boys have their weapons back, and the bag guys are defeated once more.
Kinji is taken just after this point in time when everything is resolved, about to go back out into the world and continue training.
All of this has nothing to do with Kinji just yet. So, moving on.
