C H A R A C T E R;
NAME: Kinji Takigawa // ☆☆Starninger☆
CANON: Shuriken Sentai Ninninger
POINT IN CANON: Post-series (after both the "Ninnin VS ToQ" and "Ninninger Returns: Ninnin Girls VS Ninnin Boys" movies)
AGE: Around 23
APPEARANCE: Six foot plus of cowboy

CANON HISTORY: Available here (alongside headcanons for filling in the blanks).

Kinji's history is surprisingly angsty for a sentai. When he was just a wee child, his father and older brother were both killed by a werewolf. This becomes Kinji's driving motivation in life: to get revenge for his beloved family members and kill the werewolf. When he's in his late teens he discovers the Last Ninja and becomes dedicated to the idea of becoming one, and eventually meets the Ninninger. He spends a month trying to kill them, under the stipulation that if he could beat them, he could become the Last Ninja's pupil; but instead ends up befriending them all along the way while they're defeating the Big Bad's monsters, so was thus unsuccessful in his mission, and sent away. However, he got brought back by accident, and through helping the Ninninger instead, gets to become the Last Ninja's pupil and one of the Ninninger himself.

While with them, he does manage to find the werewolf that killed his family, and gets quickly defeated by him. With major villain Kyuuemon's help, he was able to beat the werewolf, but was injured by him, and a few episodes later was turned into one by Kyuuemon. With help, Kinji was able to break the curse, and even got a sick power-up out of it.

He's more or less a side character after this point, always around when shit's going down, but he's no less integral to the group than any of the other Ninninger, and as a team the six of them (plus Akaninger's father and the Last Ninja), defeat the big bad and save the world. After that, the six of them separate for training, and reunite again after two years to show off their skills in a Boys vs Girls contest, which the girls win with the unknown help of the bad guys. Kinji is taken from after the Boys vs Girls event, as he leaves to go train in the world again.

CANON PERSONALITY:
  • ☆ Dramatic as fuck. He lives and breathes unnecessary verbosity and overly enthusiastic physical gestures. He even learned his Japanese from rakugo and period dramas. However, he doesn't use these as a mask or to hide behind. Kinji is a surprisingly genuine person; all his affectations are entirely sincere, and should a situation call for a more serious tone, he's very good at those too.
  • ☆ Uncomfortably energetic. Kinji has an apparent surplus of energy, and always tends to be moving or just doing something. This usually manifests as him being a very physical friend, prone to throwing arms around or leaning against people. It's great for being social, or in combat situations, since he'll always be ready to go, but at the same time there's not really an off switch.
  • ☆ A natural socialite. Inclined to make friends even in the more serious or dire situations (like trying to kill his targets), regardless of whether he's actively wanting to or not. He's good at reading the atmosphere in a social situation and acting appropriately, but also fully willing to ignore it. He's genuinely a nice person, but not necessarily a good one - he is blatantly not above trying to murder actual people through underhanded methods, has been shown killing sentient monsters with glee, and can just be kind of an asshole, happy to poke at people's sore spots just to see what kind of reaction it gets him. He is highly disinclined to backing down from a situation and is very difficult to cow or intimidate into doing so. And until you get to know him, he can just be kind of obnoxious.
  • ☆ Probably has some form of PTSD after watching his family die in front of him when he was just a kid. He did eventually get to kill the werewolf responsible for it, but revenge isn't quite closure - his family is still dead, after all - and even two years after the event it's still something he had to adjust to: spending more than fifteen years of his life with full intent on murder takes a while to readjust from. It doesn't help that in those two years he was probably off killing more monsters as he travelled. When faced with a monster, he shows nothing but boundless enthusiasm and an encyclopaedic knowledge of what they are and what they do, and won't hesitate to kill them on the spot.

POINT OF DEPARTURE: After "Ninninger Returns: Ninnin Girls VS. Ninnin Boys"
ABILITIES:
  • Nintality: Gone into in-depth in the link, but basically it's just the driving energy behind Kinji's ninja powers. Allows him to, amongst other things: teleport (range unknown, but apparently big); move and jump at incredible speeds; summon items from hammerspace; and hide behind objects that should otherwise be impossible, such as poles or curtains. tl;dr - Nintality is what makes Kinji a ninja.
  • Martial Arts: While not apparently expertly proficient in any one style, his default fighting style is something like a boxer or brawler, with a ninjutsu twist. Physically he's the strongest of the Ninninger by a wide margin, and his fighting style reflects his preference towards brute strength over skill. Relatedly, when armed with his Swordgun, his swordsmanship is more similar to a Western swordsman than a Japanese one.
  • Weapons Proficiency: An expert at his unique Swordgun; by extension, he can also use rifles to some extent, and is also reasonably proficient at katanas. Due to his cowboy upbringing, it can be assumed he had at least a basic understanding of pistols and shotguns as well.
  • Robotics and Mechanics: Kinji designed and created his own equipment: specifically his StarBurger and Swordgun, though it's implied he also designed the schematics for Rodeomaru and the Bison Buggy (the actual building thereof was by someone else). He also appears to be capable of programming to some extent, since the Youkai Detector app on his phone seems to be his own invention.
  • Language skills: Kinji fluently speaks both Japanese and English. However, both are stupid: his Japanese is learned from rakugo and period dramas, so his turns of phrase are unusual and archaic, and he ends his sentences in de gozayasu; as well, his English is Texan.

INVENTORY:
  • Ninja Starburger; this functions as a smartphone, camera, and monster detector (specifically of Youkai within his universe). And, most importantly, it is how he transforms into all the spandex goodness that is Starninger, the bonus Ranger in his Sentai series.
  • Star Swordgun; Kinji's primary weapon is an electric guitar-shaped sword that fires energy bullets in a similar style to a semi-automatic rifle. To switch between Sword Mode and Gun Mode, Kinji simply has to change his grip, implying that the gun mode is always active. In place of the sound hole is the location for his shuriken to be placed and activated. It is also able to fire a looped energy lassoo from the gun barrel. Typically this is kept in a fitted guitar case, though he can pull it out of hyperspace at his leisure.
  • Ninja Sword Gekiatsuto; a special katana that is used to upgrade Kinji to his Super Starninger form, a more gaudy powerful version of his regular armour.
  • ☆ Numerous Nin Shuriken; these are multipurpose attachments that the Ninninger share. In-depth descriptions available here, but in summary:

ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW? Should any other Ninninger arrive, they would have access to Kinji's shurikens and other ninja equipment (and he, theirs) through a shared hammerspace. This has been shown in-canon through the Ninninger frequently taking and using each other's shuriken, particularly that of auxiliary OtomiNin.

As well, several of Kinji's shuriken allow him to summon giant mechas: unless the game happens to arrive in a world or Jaunt where giant mechas are sustainable (such as his own or another Sentai/Tokusatsu universe), they will be nonfunctional.
